The new nanny, Martha, started yesterday.

I hoped there was a way Kaylee would get along with Martha. Martha was an elderly, lovely woman, Mexican—even though she couldn’t make an entire English sentence without inserting an “Ay, pobrecito,” she was good at taking care of Kaylee so far, I feared she was too old and wouldn’t be able to relate to Kaylee well. But so far, even though Kaylee was sour, she hadn’t come to me with complaints yet.

Since beggars couldn’t be choosers, I was willing to work with Martha because the alternative was Penny. And Penny wasn’t an option; things were going where, and I wasn’t about to interrupt her life when she had her whole life before her.

Furthermore, seeing how I left Penny after our hookup, I didn’t think she would want anything to do with me. I used her like a thing for my enjoyment—well, we both enjoyed ourselves. But since I had to go and be an asshole, I wouldn’t hold it against her if she shot me in the leg if she ever saw me again.

I had to figure out a way to stop thinking about Penny; it seemed all my thoughts always found a way to lead back to her. What I would give to wrap my fingers around her sexy strawberry hair and kiss her with all the intensity that had been brewing inside me ever since I left her in that hotel room. Fuck.

I was feeling particularly fuzzy this morning. I adjusted my tie for the umpteenth time before going downstairs to look for Kaylee and kiss her goodbye—I had a new client, and I was due for work in thirty minutes, but I wanted to ensure Kaylee was settled before leaving. It was a Saturday, so she wouldn’t attend school today.

“Kaylee?” I called when I didn’t see her or Martha in the kitchen where she was supposed to have breakfast.

I heard her little footsteps come in from the living room; Kaylee soon appeared with Terror—the white Chihuahua puppy—walking solidly behind her while wagging its tail.

“Looking for me?” Kaylee asked with a coy smile, and I immediately knew she was up to no good.

I sighed. “Have you had breakfast?”

Kaylee pouted and shook her head.

I cursed.

“Where is Martha? I can’t find…” I started but halted when Terror began to sniff the helm of my trousers. I shifted uncomfortably from the puppy when I heard a loud thud of ceramics breaking.

Then a thud.

It came from Kaylee’s room.

“Stay here. I’ll be right back,” I told Kaylee, jogging upstairs.

When I got to Kaylee’s room, Martha, dressed in a white and navy uniform she insisted on wearing, was lying on the rug in the middle space—Kaylee’s teapots in pieces all around her.

“Martha!” I rushed to her. I wasn’t sure she was breathing with how still she was.

“What’s wrong with Martha, daddy?” Kaylee asked from the door jamb. Fuck.

“Go downstairs, honey,” I told Kaylee, bending beside Martha and checking for a pulse or any sign of injury while my free hand reached for my cell phone and dialed 911.
